Guide to the Tricks Database
Go back to the Tricks Database

In this database, we have collected a list of every flying trapeze trick. You'll find a brief description, photos (for some tricks) and a video. We've listed them in categories which seemed sensible to us, we hope you find them easy to use.

First of all, the database is and will always be a work in progress. If you know a trick we don't have, or want to provide some extra information (photos, video or a better description), then we would love to hear from you. Contact us here.

Videos are linked to from YouTube and are all publically available. Although we've tried to show the best video we could find, don't expect them always to be a 'perfect' trick. They are included to give you an idea of what the trick involves. Likewise for the description - we've included brief instructions about how to perform the trick so you know which trick we're talking about. It is not intended to be a 'teach yourself' resource. Get someone to teach your properly if you want to try something new (and always use safety lines!)
Somersaults and Twists
We've included the number of somersaults and twists on each move. We'd like to explain how we have worked these out:

Twists:
A twist is when you turn around an axis going from the top of your head to your feet. They're easy to count. When you turn around and come back to where you were facing, you've done one twist, if you end up facing the opposite way, you've done half etc.

Somersaults
Somersaults turn around an axis going from one hip to the other. On the trapeze, somersaults are measured from your body position as you pass your own crane bar (at the bottom of your swing) to your position when you pass the catcher's crane bar. By fixing these two points, there is no confusion (hopefully). Here's a diagram showing a layout catch. You can see that in between the two measuring points, the flyer makes a full backward somersault.
